EUREK0506 is a project on a European level organised by the high school Angela Figuera in Sestao, Spain. The aim of the project consists on making good use of the didactic possibilities that an exceptional event, which will take place during this school year, offers: TWO SOLAR ECLIPSES.

For the first and unique time in history, at least until the year 2029, there is a great opportunity for students from different European schools to follow closely two solar eclipses of a different nature in the same school year. Students will be able to take facts and photographs of the two eclipses from different places, compare the taken facts with the ones taken by other groups, draw conclusions and even more, some of them will observe both eclipses “in situ”. For many a solar eclipse is the most moving and shocking phenomenon and one that may motivate students to get more interested in science.

The phenomenon we are speaking about, is a ring-shaped eclipse of the sun that could be seen from the Iberian Peninsula on October 3rd and a total eclipse which will occur on March 29th and clearly visible in Turkey.

Since the beginning of the XVIIIth century there has not been visible two solar eclipses from Europe in the same school year and what´s more this phenomenon will not occur again until the year 2029. This is a unique occasion.

The facts and pictures taken will be used by the students from the different co- working high schools to do some didactic-scientific works. Besides, the taken images from different places will be placed in this web on the very dates when the eclipses are taking place. We are sure our students will feel proud of watching the images taken by them and their co-workers in the web.

They will compare in the field the different situations, the chronology and geometry of the eclipse depending on the place from where it is observed.

Finally journeys to watch both eclipses from the best possible observing places have been planned. The Spanish secondary school Angela Figuera is in touch with TEV Inanç Türkeş Özel Lisei secondary school in Turkey.

Both schools have plans to prepare an exchange, so that the Turkish students unfortunately could not come to Spain in October 2005 and the students from Sestao can travel to Turkey in March 2006.
